About Us
Not Just a Burger is more than just a restaurant—it’s a legacy built on family, passion, & the love of great food.
Founder Karen Hill was inspired by her mother, Betty Jean Wooten, who made homemade burgers for coworkers in a town with no nearby restaurants. Betty Jean’s burgers filled a gap with both convenience and unforgettable flavors, and her cooking & dedication to serving others left a lasting impression, forming the foundation of Karen’s lifelong dream.
Though life led Karen through different careers, cooking remained her joy—especially Sunday dinners with family. One Sunday, without plans to cook, her daughter Yakina asked what time dinner would be ready. Karen improvised with what she had—hamburger buns. The result was a burger so flavorful that her husband jokingly said, “This burger is so good, I could sell this little piece I have left and quit my job!” Yakina added, “This isn’t just an ordinary burger, but it’s definitely the answer to my hunger.” From that, the name & slogan were born: “Not Just a Burger—It’s the Answer to Your Hunger.” The very next day, Karen searched for a restaurant location, and the rest is history.
Today, Karen and her family proudly serve not just burgers, but a menu full of Southern favorites, from fried catfish to gumbo. Every dish honors her mother’s legacy, proving that food made with love is always the best answer.
With the support of her husband Chris, daughters Yakina & Vensula, late son Johnnie (RIP 2009), and beloved grandchildren Kinya, Omari, Star, and Laylonii, Karen has made her lifelong dream a reality.
